About Nessa

5369
Homegrown South East Girl straight from the heart of Charlton. I've been studying and passionate about film for many years, and this was my first ever production independently. I have always been keen on the Fantasy genre, and thinking of ideas to create escapism, and imagination to the audience. I am also very keen on adventure/sci-fi/action/psychological thrillers and have made several ideas for these genres. When i saw this competition, i created this, and this would be a great opportunity for undiscovered film makers. I may not have the upper hand of most with industry experience, but i do have the drive, passion and dedication to film. I'm crazy, not afraid to be myself with a n imaginative mind and have a strange addiction to ost's especially Hans Zimmer and Harry Gregson-Williams

I could pick up on all the bits that don't work for me, but then sci-fi and fantasy rarely pleases everyone even when there's millions of pounds in the production. However, you do seem to have a network of support and the passion is obviously there. I'd say this competition isn't the be all and end all, every day's a school day and you should stick with it.

if anyone doesn't like say the effects, when its a no budget film, then theyre just pathetic....it takes millions to make the special effects you see in hollywood films so I would say you did very well.
It's a very risky genre to take on when you dont have the budget for it, due mostly to effects and locations, but i think you did very well with what you have. drive, passion, dedication, and not afraid to risk doing something different! 5 stars for the effort from me

To answer your question, I've never been much of a simple girl, I've always wanted to do something unique, out of the box, and take those risks. If I was simple, I'd pretty much be boring. I'm a very outgoing character whose not afraid to take risks. Simple doesn't go with who I am, so sorry if you feel simple is key.

It was very different, and because of your budget, it doesn't look as great as it would. the quality is not great, but you explained that to me. Something about your original file was 200mb and it needed to be less, so I'm guessing your full quality version will be much more clean.
That's all I have to say really on critique, but got some blessings.

The story for this was alot more in depth, and had to do with perceptions we have of good and evil, therefore it was intentionally meant to confuse you, but reveal truth in the end. With a huge pre-production process, and planning and excitement for this being my first project I couldn't fit in all i wanted for the 2:30 minutes, but I learned that mistake during post production of course. I still stand by my decision to make something completely different, and all in all it was a wonderful experience I wouldn't change. I tried to adhere to all audiences. Children with subtle action and visual effects, and adults for a more in depth storyline, and an odd twist.

Not my cup of tea personally, I'm not fond of fantasy flicks, but my little ones went complete bonkers watching the effects. I'd say well done.

ok this was different. I haven't seen any on here that have used this genre so this is a pretty rare piece. i love vfx and a non obvious plot and i think you did it well.
definately deserves a place in the top 12, but doubt it will win with the rivalries, fantasy/action isn't for everyone.

now this is interesting, because its quite revolutionary, it's a low budget fantasy film. It isn't widely known so this is a very rare video indeed.
I like what you've done here, its not perfect, but no budget, and little time you've done well for yourself. I can nit pick about every little thing i didn't like but i would be doing that for every film on here, none of them are perfect, not even the ones with a budget.
Not everyone is going to like it, but i think you have accomplished a genre on a no budget which people should understand isnt easy, but i liked the effects alot. imagine what can be seen WITH a budget. I'm sure it will be engaging and enjoyable.

great effects for a low budget short, but generic scripting and performances lacking conviction bring it down a notch. Technically accomplished, this would be greatly improved by the involvement of a higher level of dramatist.

No stars and this is why. It's very nice to have support from friends and family, as this film obviously does have that support in abundance..you have friends giving reasons to why they love your film, very nice of them.. But what part of the film do they really love. The story line is weak the acting is bad, the effects are poor. One positive, you have made a film, well done. Keep it up and you will get better, good luck with that. All I'm seeing is a bad film with loads of support. If they really want to help, they must stop telling you what you want to hear..

Now cue reply below from friend who wont have a bad or truthful word said against your film...how so predicable..

Hmmm. this was a strange concept to take on. i understood it, but it has its flaws. but with no budget maybe thats where the problem lies. not good enough actors i would say in my opinion, and choreography was quite weak, but then again im not expecting the matrix.
You do need some work on it, and you probably know this.
But have to disagree with chris. I feel his critique is quite low, and maybe he was expecting a high budget competitor into this so therefore i think his comment was low and quite pathetic. I'm sure he is one of those rooting for his fellow mate to win so bringing others down is his specialty. You've got to expect idiots in the industry so don't take it too much to heart. I would be shocked if this won, but I'd also be shocked if it didn't get through. it contains originality/story/plot/action what you would expect in a fantasy. but more depth is where the problem lies

In response to Chris' comment. There has been plenty of comments on where i need to improve. most is not from friends/family from my part. I have been told where my problems are from critics on here which I'm grateful for. I don't know what you expect from a first time film, with no budget. This isn't a competition for discovered film makers who want to make more money. It's for people who don't have that start yet. So i think your comments are farfetched and you expect too much. If you find the effects are poor how could I improve this on no budget? explain that as oppose to abusing it for what it is. I would like to know where i could 'improve' not be abused on.
I have been watching comments on other films from you yourself, and quite bias opinions you seem to reply with, so I'm taking into account it isn't your type of film, but I'm not listening to someone who wants to abuse simply because they want others to win. I need to learn from my weaknesses. I know there is massive competition, and some more deserving then me yes, but the only thing that mattered to me was to make a film in a deadline, with no budget, which i accomplished.
Thank you for all who have voted, and hopefully i can make way for no budget/low budget fantasy films. It's a hard platform but I stick to making something original.

Chris...What makes u think that these 130+ people are all good friends of Nessa?

Constructive criticism is always good and Nessa cleary knows where she's lacking but she also has her reasons for it. Go through all the comments and you'll find some people criticizing the film. But obviously their manner is a whole lot different from yours. And secondly, there isnt any part of the film people are loving it for; its the whole film. And even though it has been made on a really low budget, but if you have the filmer's mind, you can pretty much catch those elements which reflect the creativity and the sense of thrill and anticipation that she's trying to put forward with this clip.

And finally, guess what... it doesnt really matter what you write down in here, as far as virgin media shorts and its viewers dont have a problem with it!

    Right.

well, you have tried to do something very tough and for that you must be commended. BUT for your own sake do not use 'actors' like that again. Its relativly easy to get hold of good actors that want to do something random every now and then and i know several well established actors that do shorts and free stuff just for the crack. The biggest mistake you made was not directign the action properly. Even the running was realistic. Running for your life or to kill looks very different. When you are fighting you are carnal, so you should move like a lion fighitng for control of the pride. Your guys looked nothign like that.

Yes the effects werent jurrasic park but people shouldnt expect that from a first tiem film maker. The flip side of that coin is, if you can make it look semi real, should it go in. Try mixing CG with life action such as real smoke.

Do keep making films, do take criticism, no matter how harsh and be your harshest critic. It will make you better. But most of all, enjoy what you do and never EVER give up

I think its shows potential. i mean i agree with some, the acting of some is quite poor, the fight scene could have been better, the story for me was clear but little things could have helped others who are having a hard time decifer it. but i wouldn't expect a miracle from a first time movie maker. You can always reflect from your piece what you can do to make it better. but i think this makes a good starting point. not afriad to do something 'out there'. Not the best but wish you all the best with it, i'm sure beginning talent will be recognised amongst the professionals.

Not great acting, but most of the shorts on here have bad acting...maybe thats where you're all going wrong. then again those with great actors have poor story/context. still, i liked the story, it was confusing but i got it at the end, i suppose that's what you were trying. ah well...next time maybe get better actors and I'm sure it will be heaps better. but a nice good first try.

I thought it was great. shrouded story, effects, action, fireballs, it makes a change to some on here. i think some are expecting miracles, but the only ones with top quality are professionals, basically the discovered talent so i say people should see behind the inny bitty flaws that you would expect from a first time and stop expecting the 'oh my god' film. Some people take time to turn into the next Steven Speilberg, he didn't become where he is now in a day. i can point out all the stuff you could have done better, but i would be repeating everyone else.

Thank you for all the feedback. It's very important for me to learn what I can do to improve as i progress as a Film maker.
It is no excuse, but this production was in a very small time limit. I heard about it when it started, however i was still doing work at university so towards the end of May was when we started the production, so wasn't alot of time to make it perfect to how some would expect. There was a ton of pre production compared to anything else, so alot of paperwork to go through and planning, storyboard, location and permissions, etc was done by me, which taught me a lesson of maybe getting more help. But time was very short to find actors, and I did not know where to begin, so i got some tips on where to look, but gave the actors only 2 days prior to shooting which again, my fault I should have advertised sooner but didn't have the definate dates etc needed and so on. So I'm very thankful for the people that did participate at short notice, and don't regret who took part. they all worked extremely hard and like myself they also can learn and get better the more that they do.
As for the fight scene, again, almost no time to practice and get a smoother routine, however my performance was slightly lacking due to an injury i got on my knee. I can only but apologise if any feel the performance wasn't to your approval. It was a first time for all of us, including the crew, and we can only get better with all the critiques we can all learn where we went wrong and can improve. And as Lola has said you can't expect a perfect film first time round. Rome wasn't built in a day.
